David E. Hockman, MD
Joint Replacement
Dr. Hockman is a Missouri native who completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia and then remained in Columbia to attend medical school at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Kansas-Wichita. Dr. Hockman went on to become a fellow at The Anderson Othropaedic Clinic and Research Institute in Alexandria, Virginia where he focused on adult reconstructive surgery.
In 2003 the Columbia Orthopaedic Group recruited Dr. Hockman to continue to "define excellence" in total joint replacement surgery. Dr. Hockman's approach to caring for his patients is to take time with them, to understand their suffering, and to provide them with evidence-based effective solutions. Some may need medical treatment while others require surgery. Regardless, he strives to ensure that patients understand their condition and proposed treatment options. Just as Bach and Handel often signed their musical manuscripts with the initials SDG (Soli Deo Gloria - glory to God alone), what truly matters to Dr. Hockman is glorifying God in the way he treats his patients.
Dr. Hockman's practice is focused on less invasive hip and knee replacement surgery. He feels that being a part of this exciting technology provides patients with a smaller incision and the hope of less pain and a faster recovery. Within a few months of joining Columbia Orthopaedic Group, Dr. Hockman became the first surgeon in mid-Missouri to perform minimally invasive total knee replacement surgery. Since that time, he has performed over two thousand primary and revision total knee replacement surgeries on patients from across the country. Dr. Hockman is Board Certified, and he remains active in pursuing the advancement of new technology in the treatment of hip and knee pain.
Other individuals working directly on Dr. Hockman's team are Robin Gray, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Clinical Assistant Sarah Nelson. Robin and Sara focus on meeting their patients’ needs in a timely fashion with kindness and compassion.
Dr. Hockman and his wife, Sherry, have three children, Spencer, Alex, and Paige. Sherry stays at home with the children, but also finds time to do interior design work and volunteer work for Life Network and the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. When Dr. Hockman is not enjoying time with his family, he enjoys being active in church, co-teaching a Sunday school class, sponsoring the junior high youth group, and assisting in men’s ministry. Dr. Hockman also enjoys not only singing and playing the piano, but also encouraging his children in their musical pursuits of piano, guitar, drums, and voice.
