COG history

The Columbia Orthopaedic Group started in December 1965 in a little white house on Broadway Blvd in downtown Columbia, Missouri. The three founding partners quickly gained patients from across the mid-Missouri area. By 1969 Columbia Orthopaedic Group had doubled in size.

Eager to develop the healthcare landscape in Columbia, the physicians partnered with neighboring practices to build Columbia Regional Hospital in 1972.  From there, sub-specialty programs developed including sports medicine, spine, joint replacement, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, and trauma and fracture care.

The sports medicine practice, in particular, has seen exciting advances. From training alongside Olympic athletes (twice) to assisting on the sidelines of the Women’s World Cup, COG had a part in orthopaedics at an international level. Columbia Orthopaedic Group’s president, Dr. Mark Adams, recounts being a team physician for the 1996 (Atlanta) and 2000 (Sydney) olympics as some of the highlights of his career. The physicians even cared for members of the Harlem Globetrotters while traveling on tour.

At the state level, COG became the preferred provider for student-athletes of the University of Missouri in Columbia and Rolla, and the University of Kansas among other programs. COG has been providing exceptional care to student-athletes since the 1970s.

By 2008 Clinic growth once again outpaced the current facility so Columbia Orthopaedic Group expanded into a brand new 72,000 square foot state-of-the-art building at the southwest corner of Broadway and Keene Street. This custom-designed facility consists of physician offices, exam rooms, an imaging center, and an in-house ambulatory surgery center, all conveniently under one roof.

Today, we have 26 physicians and surgeons who are committed to excellence in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of orthopaedic injury and disease.

For more than 60 years, Columbia Orthopaedic Group has provided patients with the comfort and care needed to return to active lifestyles and maintain mobility. Our responsibility to you is to provide excellence in surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic care. We look forward to serving the residents of Columbia, Missouri and the surrounding communities for many more years to come.
