Dr. Miles is a Columbia, Missouri native. His career started in engineering and manufacturing with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri - Columbia. He then pivoted into the medical space to fulfill his true calling.
When Dr. Miles returned to Columbia to attend the University of Missouri Medical School, he graduated with honors and completed a one-year internship in general surgery at the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics. He remained with the University to complete his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He narrowed his focus to the spine when he moved to Plano, Texas to complete a spine fellowship at the Texas Back Institute.
Dr. Miles joined the Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 2000 and specializes in adult degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine. He believes an accurate diagnosis is essential for proper treatment and utilizes the best imaging technologies combined with a thorough history and physical examination to achieve this goal. He embraces the philosophy of aggressive and appropriate conservative care for degenerative conditions of the spine. If operative intervention is needed, the most advanced treatment options are used, typically employing minimally invasive spine surgical techniques. Dr. Miles has a special interest in motion sparing technology, and disc arthroplasty is a major focus of his practice.
In his efforts to push the envelope of spine care, Dr. Miles conducts clinical research and participates in clinical trials of new devices and treatments for spinal disease. Columbia Orthopaedic Group is a study site for lumbar and cervical artificial discs. Dr. Miles is also a pioneer in anterior surgery of the lumbar spine and has developed instrumentation systems used worldwide.
Dr. Miles is board certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of numerous societies including the Missouri State Medical Society, Missouri State Orthopaedic Society, North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
