Get to Know Dr. Kurt Krautmann

Dr. Krautmann is Columbia Orthopaedic Group (COG)'s newest foot and ankle specialist.

As a second-generation orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Krautmann's decision to join the medical field was easy. His illustrious education includes the University of Notre Dame and Wake Forest Medical School in North Carolina, where he met his future wife.

Fun fact: Dr. Krautmann assisted the Georgia Tech Baseball Team during his Orthopaedic Residency. He strived to keep those athletes in peak health, and now he is bringing his specialized foot and ankle expertise to COG. He will help patients maintain their mobility to live life to the fullest.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Jefferson City, Missouri.

How would you describe your family?
I am the youngest of five children. My father was an orthopaedic surgeon in Jefferson City. He definitely inspired me to go into medicine. My wife and I are currently expecting our first child in 2021.

How do you spend your weekends or free time?
My weekend hobbies include cooking, running, and weightlifting. I enjoy watching baseball and football. I expect with a new house and a first child on the way, many of these activities will change soon!

What is your favorite restaurant?
Arris Pizza. Ever since I left home for college, I wanted to find a way to ship it across the country. I had to go back whenever I visited.

What is your favorite sports team?
Notre Dame Fighting Irish!

How would you like to make your biggest impact at COG?
I want to help patients maintain their mobility so they can live life to the fullest.

How did you choose your specialty?
My father was an orthopaedic surgeon. He was constantly happy with the work he did. I think I knew if I went into medicine, I would follow in his footsteps. Sure enough, when I got to medical school, orthopaedic surgery was my favorite rotation. I decided to subspecialize in foot and ankle surgery primarily because of my background in physics. The biomechanics of the foot and ankle always fascinated me. It's still a growing field of orthopaedic surgery.

What was the biggest lesson you learned from your dad?
It's difficult to pick any one thing because he taught me so much. He taught me how to be compassionate, he taught me empathy, and most importantly, he taught me always to do what is right, not what is easy. He was the best role model. Dr. Krautmann is excited to return to his roots in Mid-Missouri by joining the COG. He treats a broad range of foot and ankle conditions both operatively and nonoperatively. His area of focus includes trauma, deformity correction, sports, and Achilles tendon pathology.

Dr. Krautmann cares about the science of health and longevity. He celebrates the opportunity to continue his family legacy by restoring mobility and improving the quality of life of his patients.
