Pain Management

Back pain is a common reason for doctor visits or absenteeism from work. Physical discomfort can occur anywhere on the spine or back, ranging from mild to disabling.

When it lasts three months or longer, back pain is considered chronic. Dealing with chronic back pain is challenging, and it can be even more frustrating when the cause is unknown. The most common causes include arthritis of the spine, spinal stenosis, disc problems, and myofascial pain syndrome.

Back pain is more common with people of advanced age. It also commonly results from underlying disease or injury, as listed above. Of course, back pain can occur without any of those factors. Aggravating factors causing chronic back pain include:

  • Overuse
  • Working out or lifting too much
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Sleeping in an uncomfortable position
  • Wearing a poorly fitting or heavy backpack

Simple home treatment, proper body mechanics, and other mindful measures can prevent or relieve back pain.
