Foot and Ankle

Total ankle replacement, also known as total ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons use to treat ankle arthritis or injury. This surgery is often performed when arthritis has worn down the cartilage and the patient is suffering from chronic pain, inflammation, weakened support and a hindered lifestyle.
With total ankle replacement, the ankle joint is removed and replaced with an artificial implant made of metal and plastic. This preserves ankle motion, reduces pain and increases functionality during activity.

Signs and Symptoms:

In most cases, a total ankle replacement will begin with a diagnosis of arthritis or osteoporosis. The following signs and symptoms are indications that you should discuss treatment options with our foot & ankle specialist:

  • Chronic pain, swelling and instability from arthritis or osteoporosis
  • Insufficient healing from past injury
  • Long term stress on joints
  • Inflammation, redness, and bruising
  • Disability or obesity resulting in chronic pain

If your daily life is being riddled with pain and stress, talk to our foot and ankle specialists about your options to get back to a normal routine and reduce pain.
