There are more than three million cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in the US every year. The condition is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The hallmark sensation of carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness and tingling in the hand and arm resulting from a pinched nerve in the wrist.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand. The median nerve and the tendons that bend the fingers are housed within the carpal tunnel. The median nerve provides feeling to the palm side of the thumb and all fingers, except the pinky. When irritated tendons thicken or other swelling narrows the tunnel, the resulting pressure on the median nerve can cause CTS.
