A meniscus tear occurs in the rubbery knee C-shaped cartilage cushioning the shinbone from the thigh bone (menisci).

A torn meniscus is one of the most common knee injuries. It can be caused by forceful twisting or rotation of the knee, especially when applying full weight to the knee. Even kneeling, squatting, or heavy lifting can result in this common ailment.

Treating the pain, swelling, and stiffness often start with rest, ice, pain relievers, and sometimes physical therapy (PT). For many patients, this can be sufficient to relieve the pain of a torn meniscus and give the injury time to heal on its own. In severe cases, a torn meniscus can require surgery.
